How to Find AWS KMS rotation for customer created master keys not enabled

Problem

Cryptographic best practices discourage extensive reuse of encryption keys. Consequently, Customer Master Keys (CMKs) should be rotated to prevent usage of compromised keys.

info

This security check is part of the CIS Amazon Web Services Benchmarks and is rated severity medium.

Prerequisites

This guide assumes that you have already installed and configured Resoto to collect your AWS cloud resources.

Directions

  1. Execute the following search command in Resoto Shell or Resoto UI:

    > search is(aws_kms_key) and kms_key_manager==CUSTOMER and access_key_status=Enabled and kms_key_rotation_enabled=false
    kind=aws_kms_key, ..., region=resoto-poweruser
    kind=aws_kms_key, ..., account=poweruser-team
  2. Pipe the search command into the dump command:

    > search is(aws_kms_key) and kms_key_manager==CUSTOMER and access_key_status=Enabled and kms_key_rotation_enabled=false | dump
    reported:
     id: /aws/kms/123
     name: some-name
     ctime: '2022-12-05T22:53:14Z'
     kind: aws_kms_key
     age: 2mo28d

    The command output will list the details of all non-compliant aws_kms_key resources.

  3. Fix detected issues by following the remediation steps:

    For every KMS Customer Master Keys (CMKs), ensure that Rotate this key every year is enabled.

    note

    Please refer to the AWS KMS documentation for details.
